The founding Chairman of the Independent Corrupt
Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Justice Mustapha
Akanbi, on Thursday in Ilorin, condemned the action of the members of
the House of Representatives, who are taking away their Peugeot 407
official cars bought at about N6.1m each for N850,000.
Akanbi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said the development was an act of insensitivity. He warned the lawmakers not to take Nigerians for granted, advising them to do the right thing by assessing the cars and equipment correctly and pay the right prices if they must go with them.
Akanbi said, “I think they should bear in mind that Nigerians are going through hardship and they should not take them for granted and take away resources that belong to the country.
“This is terrible. I do not think it is right. I condemn this act and I think Nigerians should also speak up against this. They should have made a good assessment of the cars to know their true worth and not to take them away at such a ridiculous amount. They should rather do what is right. I condemn it It is a rip off. It is very bad.”
also, the Trade Union Congress on Thursday criticised the decision by members of the House of Representatives to sell their official cars and office equipment to themselves at rock-bottom prices.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the TUC said the move was not in the best interest of the nation.
General Secretary, TUC, Chief John Kolawole, described the decision as regrettable and highly controversial.
The Sixth Assembly presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, had on June 1, at their plenary session taken the decision to sell their official cars and office equipment such as computers and scanners to themselves.
Kolawole said, “It is worrisome that some activities of our lawmakers have been a source of controversy to the people.
“They allocate salaries to themselves at will. Now they take away official cars and office equipment on their exit at a give-away price. This is sad.”
Kolawole urged Nigerians to begin to call those in public offices to order, saying it was one of the ways of moving the economy and the country forward.
He urged President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that the incoming lawmakers were more prudent in spending public funds.
The Secretary of the CNPP, Kwara State, Mr. Adebayo Lawal has also said the action of the members of the House of Representatives is outrageous and insensitive. Lawal said it was sad that while retired civil servants, who had served the nation for about 35 years, were not even entitled to one tenth of the severance package of the members, the legislators were further impoverishing the economy through the ridiculous sale of vehicles.
