Factional leaders of the proscribed Oyo State
council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on Tuesday
shunned the invitations extended to them by the state Commissioner of
Police, Alhaji Adisa Bolanta.
Those who were invited in connection with the recent bloody clashes among members of the union are the court-reinstated chairman, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (a.k.a Tokyo); and another factional leader, Mr. Mukaila Lamidi (a.k.a Auxiliary).
They were given up until 4pm on Tuesday to report to the police.
As at the time of filing this report, the factional leaders had not honoured the invitation but our correspondent learnt that they sent their lawyers to represent them.
But Bolanta said he was still expecting them because the police invitation was a personal one which did not give room for representation.
He gave an indication that they might be declared wanted if they failed to voluntarily report to his office.
But instead of honouring the police invitation, Akinsola has written to the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, that he would rather give himself up to the governor than to the police.
While passing a vote-of-no-confidence on Bolanta, the union leader advised the governor to take over investigation into the fracas by setting up a truth and human rights commission on the issue.
He said the police would not do a thorough job because Bolanta was an interested party.
A copy of the letter written on his behalf by his lawyer, Mr. Michael Lana, dated June 7, 2011 was made available to our correspondent in Ibadan, the state capital.
Copies of the letter were also addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim; the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 and Bolanta himself wherein he was seeking the transfer of the case from the state command.
