Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and
the new Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Isola Adekumbi, on
Monday escaped death at the House of Assembly complex in Abeokuta as
bomb experts discovered explosive substances suspected to be bomb.
Amosun who was at the Assembly complex to attend the inauguration of the seventh assembly, was about to make his speech when the experts discovered the substance inside the complex.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the timely intervention of the Officers of the Nigeria Police Force Anti-Bomb Squad saved an ugly situation as the bomb was programmed to explode when the governor was giving his speech at the occasion.
The explosive, with the yellow light blinking, was detonated and conveyed to the state police headquarters in a police patrol van with registration number NPF 1756C.
Amosun, who reacted to the incident through a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mrs. Funmi Wakama, condemned the act.
The statement read, “The attention of His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has been drawn to the discovery of an explosive substance suspected to be a bomb within the state House of Assembly complex just as he was about to inaugurate the seventh session of the Assembly.
“The governor finds such development not only condemnable but it also depicts the height of desperation and wickedness by some agents of violence still prowling the state. He believes such a development is alien to the state and vows that his administration will not allow agents of violence to peddle their trade in the state.”
Amosun, according to the statement, had also directed relevant security agencies in the state to investigate the discovery and unmask those behind the incident and bring them to book accordingly.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Command, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent, confirmed the development.
Adejobi, who described the substance as Improvised Explosive Device, stated that the police would ensure thorough investigations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book accordingly
He said, “We have to commend the officers and men at the scene of the incident for being vigilant enough to detect the explosive early.”
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Daura, had directed that proper investigations be carried out on the incident to determine the perpetrators and their motives.
At the inaugural sitting of the Ogun House of Assembly, Adekumbi, representing Egbado North Constituency was elected to lead the House.
Isola’s emergence followed his nomination by Mr. Oluomo Olakunle, from Ifo I Constituency and supported by Mr. Sonuga Olusola.
