President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday
congratulated the President of the Senate, Sen. David Mark, and the
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, on their
emergence as leaders of the two chambers of the National Assembly.
A statement by the Deputy Director, Information, in the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Justin Abuah, said Jonathan also congratulated the members of the National Assembly.
Jonathan said he looks forward to a harmonious working relationship with the leadership and members of the National Assembly.
“President Jonathan believes that the re-election of Senator David Mark as President of the Senate and the election of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representatives by their peers in the National Assembly is an affirmation of their leadership qualities and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“He wishes the leadership and members of the new National Assembly a successful tenure in the service of the nation.”
Also, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Mark and Tambuwal on their elections as head of the NASS.
He said the action of the legislators, particularly the way and manner in which they chose their leaders had given fresh hopes that the entrenchment of democratic values and ethos was still possible in the Nigeria that we all desire.
Commending the peaceful and orderly nature of the process, Atiku said the National Assembly members had, by their enviable conduct, showed themselves as “soldiers of democracy.”
The former Vice President said in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Monday that he was particularly encouraged by the pan-Nigerian voting that characterised the elections of the leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly.
“With the pattern of pan-Nigerian voting adopted by legislators in electing their leaders, there is hope that a new day beckons for deepening democratic values and ethos in Nigeria,” he said.
The Arewa Consultative Forum has also hailed the emergence of Tambuwal as the Speaker of the House Representatives.
The National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Mr. Tony Sani, said in a text message to one of our correspondents on Monday that Tambuwal election was in line with PDP’s definition on zoning.
He said the decision of Tambuwal to contest the election in contravention of the zoning arrangement of the PDP did not flout the party’s definition of zoning.
He said the ACF was of the view that the new speaker only acted in consonance with the party’s positions that while there was zoning, everybody could contest available position in a bid to enthrone excellence.
Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, has equally congratulated Tambuwal on his election, charging him to be sensitive to the growing national concerns about the huge cost of governance.
In a letter of congratulation on Monday, the governor said he was elated by Tambuwal’s emergence.
He said, “Your election is a resounding affirmation of confidence in your leadership qualities by your colleagues across political parties.”
“I am hopeful and confident that your leadership of the House would strengthen its institutional capacity to provide quality legislation in critical areas of development and public welfare.
“We need a leadership that is elevated above narrow and partisan political calculation especially in the handling of sensitive issues. I believe that you have the required maturity, liberal outlook and consensus-building skills to nurture the House as an institution for furthering collective national interests.
“The public rightly expects this new leadership to be sensitive to the growing national concerns about the huge cost of governance”. “I urge you to cultivate the necessary firmness, prudence and service-orientation in order to rationalise the extensive perks and the unsustainable expenditure structure of the House, which continue to ignite public outrage”, he said.
While wishing Tambuwal a successful tenure, Oshiomhole assured him of the “full support and partnership of the people and government of Edo State and my personal solidarity to ensure that you succeed in qualitatively uplifting the House of Representatives”.
