A delegation from the South-West chapter of the
Peoples Democratic Party has formally protested against the
non-election of a PDP member from the zone as Speaker of the House of
Representatives.
The delegation, which comprised chairmen and secretaries of the party in the six South-West states, was said to have met with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and the PDP Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Bello Mohammed, in Abuja on Monday.
The PDP Secretary in Oyo State, Alhaji Bashiru Akanbi, told reporters journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday that the South-West PDP members were not pleased with the emergence of Mr. Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker.
Akanbi said the party chairmen and secretaries were also not comfortable that the speakership which was zoned by the PDP leadership to the zone had been given to the North-West.
The PDP leadership had directed its members in the House to elect Mrs. Mulikat Adeola-Akande from Oyo State as speaker in line with its zoning arrangement.
But many members of the party, backed by their colleagues in other political parties in the House, defied the directive and elected Tambuwal.
Akanbi, however, boasted that the South-West PDP was set to reclaim the post going by the outcome of the meeting with Sambo and Mohammed.
Stating that the zone would not fold its arms and be sidelined in the running of the country, he insisted that discipline must be instilled among the members of the party.
He said, “Number four citizen in the country was zoned to the South-West and we are ready to reclaim our position in the country.
“We all worked for the party to win at federal level and we should partake of the power sharing formula.
“‘I know that the PDP will still go back on the zoning arrangement and for that reason, the South-West PDP will reclaim the House of Representatives Speaker’s seat.
“The party leaders are the ones that arranged the zoning like that; they are the people that put us at the number four position and we are saying we want our number four seat back. It is very simple.”
The Oyo State PDP secretary also hinted that a former Senate Leader, Teslim Folarin, and some leaders of the party in the state had been recommended for punishment by the party’s national secretariat for alleged anti-party activities.
On the alleged withdrawal of N3bn by Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala from the state’s account shortly before the end of his tenure as governor, Akanbi warned against what he called “unfounded rumour.”
He said, “I am challenging Governor Abiola Ajimobi to tell the whole world whether the money was for personal purpose or to pay contractors for jobs attested to by the state contract monitoring team.
“Alao-Akala paid contractors and settled the severance allowances of political office holders in the state.”
