Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, may
have abandoned the planned re-organisation of the Nigeria Police Force
he announced upon assuming office in 2010 as he had approved the
mobilisation of riot policemen for escort duty to two state governors.
A police source informed our correspondent on Monday that the IG had directed the Commander of the Mobile Police Squadron to release detachments of riot policemen to the governors of Imo and Gombe states, contrary to his earlier plan that only conventional policemen would serve as security details to governors, local council chairmen and other political office holders.
“The IG has directed over Governor Rochas Okorocha to the squadron commander and he (the governor) was given a squadron of MOPOL for escort duty in Imo State.
“You recall that the IG said only conventional policemen and the VIP Squad would be used for escort duty, but it seems he has changed his mind or he could not resist the political pressure that may have been mounted on him,” the source said.
Ringim, at his maiden conference with senior officers, had expressed regrets that the Police Mobile Force had compromised its traditional role of serving as the “punch arm” in dealing with tasking and riotous situation.
“As we all know, it is the traditional role of the police mobile force to serve as the operational punching arm of the force, thereby providing succour in the protection of lives and property.
“Regrettably, this is no more the case as the police mobile force has been subjected to performing unprofessional and degrading duties,” the IG had said while announcing the disbandment of multiple crime squads in the country.
Findings, however, indicated that the crime squads were still active in the states and at the Federal Capital Territory police command whose Special Anti-Robbery Squad is located in a disused abattoir at Garki, Abuja.
