A ranking member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has emerged as the Speaker.
Tambuwal clinched 252 votes to beat his rival, Mulikat Adeola-Akande, from Oyo State, who had 90 votes.
Five members were absent while 13 abstained.
The election was conducted by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Aminu Maikasuwa.
Members erupted in jubilation immediately the votes for Tambuwal were announced.
Maikasuwa had to wait for the din to die down before counting Adeola-Akande‘s 90 votes.
Tambuwal was elected in 2003 and was Deputy Whip of the House.
There was a standing ovation immediately Tambuwal was declared the winner of the election while members rushed to congratulate him. Some members also went to console his rival.
Adeola-Akande swiftly congratulated Tambuwal and wished him well.
His election marks a major shift in Nigeria‘s power dynamics as three of the most powerful persons in the country are Northerners.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who the nation‘s Number Two man, is from Kaduna State (North-West); Senate President, David Mark, is from Benue State (North-Central); while Tambuwal is from the North-West.
His election has upturned calculations by the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, which had zoned the Speakership to the South-West.
As it stands, the South-West does not occupy any strong political position in the leadership of the country.
President Goodluck Jonathan from Bayelsa State is the biggest catch from the South-South.
Tambuwal was immediately sworn in by the Clerk.
Meanwhile, his immediate past predecessor, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, has congratulated him in a statement by Chief Kayode Odunaro.
The House also elected Mr. Emeka Ihedioha from Imo State as the Deputy Speaker. He was elected unopposed by a unanimous vote and was immediately sworn in by the Clerk.
