Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has emerged as the new chairman of the Nigerian Governors‘ Forum.
Amaechi was a late entrant into the race to succeed the outgoing NGF Chairman, Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki.
The election was held at the Kwara State Government House in Ilorin.
The Rivers State governor beat Peter Obi of Anambra; Babangida Aliyu of Niger; and Sule Lamido of Jigawa.
But it could not be confirmed it was by consensus or election.
Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, who had been tipped for the position, strangely failed to push his alleged bid vigorously.
Reacting to the development, Amaechi told journalists that he would reposition the NGF.
Former chairmen of the influential NGF are Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa); Victor Attah (Akwa Ibom); Lucky Igbinedion (Edo); and Bukola Saraki (Kwara).
Amaechi‘s election was also contained in a communique read by Saraki.
Among those at the meeting were the governors of Osun, Lagos, Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Rivers and Cross River while the deputy governors of Katsina, Kaduna and Kano stood in for their bosses.
During his tenure as the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Amaechi chaired the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly.
