The Federal Government will give a total of
N2.81bn to senators and members of the House of Representatives as
severance package at the end of their tenure on June 5, investigations
have revealed.
Documents obtained from the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission in Abuja on Monday showed that each Senator is entitled to N6.93m and a House of Representatives member, N5.96m as allowances at the end of the current legislative tenure.
With a membership strength of 107 senators, excluding the president and the deputy president, the Senators will receive a total of N664.65m.
The severance package of the Senate President stands at N7.45m while that of the Deputy Senate President stands at N6.93m.
On the other hand, the total severance package of 358 members of the House of Representatives, excluding the Speaker and the deputy speaker, adds up to N2.13bn.
The speaker, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, is entitled to a severance package of N7.43m, while his deputy, Alhaji Usman Nafada, is entitled to N6.86m.
These details are contained in a document entitled: ‘Remuneration package for political, public and judicial office holders’ prepared by the RMAFC.
Besides showing their official perks of office, the document contains those things that constitute the severance or gratitude after the lawmakers’ tenure.
Other irregular allowances are accommodation, furniture, annual leave, vehicle loan, duty tours, and estacode for official tour abroad.
Regular allowances, on the other hand, include those paid to them for vehicle maintenance and fuelling, personal assistant, domestic staff, entertainment, utilities, constituency, wardrobe, newspapers/periodicals, and responsibility.
The salaries and allowances of lawmakers in the country have been a subject of controversy, with many members of the public advocating that the business of lawmaking should be a part-time engagement in order to reduce cost.
THE PUNCH had exclusively reported that each senator earns N15.18m in salaries and allowances monthly while each member of the House of Representatives takes home N10.59m a month.
For the Senate, each senator (excluding the Senate President and his deputy) takes home about N198.54m annually (N16.64m per month).
The amount includes each senator’s N45m quarterly allowance, which amounts to N180m annually for the four quarters of the year, and the official N18.54m that goes into their individual accounts annually as salaries and other emoluments.
According to the RMAFC report, every member of the House of Representatives takes home about N127.18m annually (or N10.59m per month).
The amount includes N28m quarterly allowance for each member, which translates into N112m annually for the four quarters of the year. It also includes the official N15.18m annual salary and other emoluments of each member.
To keep the federal lawmakers in office for one year, the Federal Government spends a staggering N67.32bn on their salaries and other allowances.
RMAFC had in 2009 prepared a bill meant to reduce the official earning of the lawmakers in conformity with the directive of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua following the global financial crisis.
However, the bill could not get the approval of the National Assembly.
If the bill had been passed and implemented, the official emolument of a senator would have come to N12, 209,060 per annum, while that of a House of Representatives member would have been N10, 273,474 annually.
