The commission said it might be necessary for the Speaker to answer questions on the alleged fraudulent deals in the House of Representatives.
Angry protesters had besieged the Abuja office of the EFCC with placards and a petition demanding an investigation of the Speaker.
Working under the aegis of the Youth Anti-Corruption League, the protesters called on the EFCC to enforce the anti-corruption policy of the government by arresting and prosecuting Bankole.
Spokesman for the protesting youth, Mr. Jumoke Ilyasu, said no Nigerian was above the law and reach of the EFCC.
“He must be made to account for his excesses and the EFCC must not allow the Nigerian people to believe that certain categories of Nigerians are above the law. EFCC must act now,” he said.
EFCC’s Head of Operations, Ibrahim Lamorde, who received the petition said the commission would investigate the allegations raised in the petitions.
Lamorde commended the courage of the protesters for coming out openly with the petition.
The EFCC operative further sought the assistance of the petitioners for further information in the cause of investigation into the allegations.
The protesters alleged that the dust raised by the N2.3bn spent on the Peugeot 407 deal in the House was yet to settle.approval of the controversial N10bn loan that had incapacitated the House and its inability to pay the salaries and allowances of the lawmakers.
With placards bearing inscriptions such as “EFCC can’t keep quiet;” Can Bankole pocket the EFCC,” We want Bankole investigated,” the protesters also demanded an investigation into the N9bn capital budget of the House in 2008.
