President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday signed the Freedom of Information Bill into law.
By this action, Nigeria joins the over 100 countries of the world that have an FOI law.
The bill had gone through various stages since it was first introduced 11 years ago in the House of Representatives.
It is one of the few bills to have passed through a long journey through the legislative process in Nigeria since independence.
During his tenure, President Olusegun Obasanjo refused to assent to the bill, in spite of entreaties from Nigerians.
