Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees
member, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has said that the South-West will
produce the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Speaking with our correspondent in a telephone interview on Monday, Babatope said that if the Senate Presidency returned to the North-Central, it behoved the South-West to produce the Speaker.
Babatope explained that the Speaker would be picked from the five elected PDP members in the House of Representatives.
He said the BoT was likely to meet before the inauguration of elected candidates to deliberate on matters affecting party organistion.
Babatope said, “It is not for the BoT to take decisions for the party; what the BoT does is to advise.
“The President is invested with the powers to choose his ministers; we can only advise.”
Babatope, in an interview, last Thursday, said the ruling party would not shortchange the South-West region in political appointment sharing.
Babatope said the jostling for political appointments by regions of the country would not becloud the hierarchy of the party from giving the South-West its due.
According to the former Minister of Transport, the zoning formula of the PDP remains intact, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan and leaders of the party will ensure merit in sharing of political appointments.
Explaining that he was unaware of any reconciliation committee set up to ensure peace within the party in the South-West, Babatope also said he was unaware that the alleged committee is chaired by a former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu.
He said, “The PDP nurses no ill-feeling against any zone. The PDP will come out with an arrangement that will suit all the zones.
“We, in the South-West, are unhappy about the electoral loss in the region but we are going to reclaim our states back. We have taken this path before in 1999 when the Alliance for Democracy won elections in the region.
“But in 2003, we took back the region. We will take back the region in the next general elections.
“The South-West PDP is awaiting the directive of the party. As a party replete with democrats, the PDP won’t alter the zoning formula.”
Babatope explained that the PDP was being repositioned in the South-West in order to win future elections.
