Barely 24 hours after the arrest of the
immediate-past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji
Bankole, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over N10bn loan
scam, the Chairman of the commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, on Monday
paid a surprise visit to the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The EFCC Chairman was accompanied by a retinue of aides and stern-looking security operatives.
Although the details of the visit were sketchy, a source within the court premises said the EFCC boss came on a “courtesy visit” to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta.
It was not clear whether the EFCC boss actually met with the CJ.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the embattled ex-Speaker may be arraigned in court today (Tuesday).
Bankole was arrested in his Asokoro, Abuja residence by about 10 operatives of the commission late on Sunday.
He was said to have resisted arrest by the operatives last Friday, promising to turn himself in by 2pm on Monday (yesterday) after allegedly making frantic telephone calls to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim.
The EFCC operatives, led by the agency’s Director of Operations, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, were said to have tried for several hours before gaining entry into the residence.
