Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the
demise of the Group Managing Director of GTBank Plc, Mr. Tayo
Aderinokun, “is a loss of a national asset.”
Atiku said in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja on Wednesday that the pioneering role of Aderinokun and the erstwhile MD of the bank, Mr. Fola Adeola, had impacted positively on the banking and financial sector of the nation’s economy.
He paid tribute to Aderinokun, who died in London on Tuesday, for sustaining and expanding the new frontiers charted by the GTBank, which has assured for it a leadership position in the banking and financial sector.
Also, the Ogun State Government, the Secretary General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Lateef Adegbite; and a former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Sarafa Isola, have described the death of Aderinokun, as a great loss to the state and the country.
The state government, Adegbite and the former minister, registered their separate reactions to the death of Aderinokun, who was an indigene of Ogun State in Abeokuta.
In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, in Abeokuta the state government stated that the deceased was one of the shinning lights of the state in recent times as evidenced by his achievements in the banking industry and his philanthropy.
“Aderinokun was a believer in quality education and that inspired his establishment of Day Waterman College, a world class institution located near Abeokuta, his hometown,” he said.
Adegbite, in his reaction through a telephone interview with our correspondent, expressed shock at Aderinokun’s death.
He said, “It was a great loss to Nigeria and very tragic. He was a great financial manager who has done so much for the country.
“We are really going to miss him in the country’s financial world. His bank is a role model of prudent management in all ramifications. I was so shocked, but I pray God will grant him Aljanat Fidau. We are really going to miss him.”
Isola, in his own reaction, described the late banking icon as “a gentleman whose love for the less privilege would forever be remembered’’
Our correspondent who visited Aderinokun’s residence at Philip Akinsehinde Close, Ibara GRA in Abeokuta, saw the gate of the residence locked with no activities in the compound.
Also, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi described the death of Aderinokun, as a big loss to the banking sector and the nation’s corporate world.
In a statement on Wednesday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olayinka Oyebode, Fayemi said he received the news of Aderinokun’s death in the UK with a rude shock.
The governor said Aderinokun’s death at the age of 56 had robbed the country of a boardroom guru, a technocrat and one of the leading lights in the banking industry, who added value to the Nigerian economy, through hard work and efficient management of men and materials.
He said Aderinokun’s death was further made painful by the fact that he passed on when hope had risen that he would recover from the protracted illness and continue the good works he was doing in the banking industry.
The governor praised the late banker’s management of GTB, which, according to him, accounted for the meteoric rise of the bank as one of the strongest and healthiest banks in the country that has contributed immensely to the economy.
Meanwhile, the flags of the GTBank Plc were flown half-mast on Wednesday in some of its branches visited by our correspondent in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The situation, it was learnt, was a way of mourning the bank’s managing director and CEO, who died on Tuesday in the UK.
For example, as early as 7am, the bank’s two flags mounted in front of its branch located at Ajibade Bus Stop along Mokola-Sango Road, Ibadan, were already flying at half-mast.
The only flag flying at full mast at the time was the national flag located between the bank’s two flags.
A condolence register was also opened in the branch in honour of the deceased.
Our correspondent saw the bank’s customers taking turn to sign the condolence register.
The news of Aderinokun’s death formed the subject of discussion of some members of staff of the bank as soon as they resumed for duty in the morning.
Meanwhile, normal banking activities went on smoothly in the branches.
