N10bn scam: ACN asks Bankole to apologise to Nigerians

The Rivers State Chapter of Action Congress of Nigeria has asked the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, to apologise to Nigerians for his involvement in the N10bn loan scam over which Bankole was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Sunday.
The ACN expressed shock that Bankole and the leadership of the House of Representatives under his leadership could obtain such a huge loan only to share it among fellow lawmakers.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with THE PUNCH on Monday, the Acting Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Mr. Jerry Needam, said Bankole should not only apologise to Nigerians, but also seek the forgiveness of the people of his constituency.
Needam noted that such huge sum would be better utilised to give the National Assembly structure a facelift if necessary, adding that it was illegal for such a huge sum to have gone into private pockets.
“Nigeria is bleeding as a result of underdevelopment and it is in this sorry state that loans are taken and shared among lawmakers. Bankole should not only apologise to Nigerians, he should also ask his constituency for forgiveness.
“Before you take a loan of such huge amount, it is imagined that it must be for the development of the National Assembly. Loans should not be taken and shared among members,” he said.
Needam pointed out that Bankole’s travails with the anti-graft operatives should be an eye-opener to corrupt and greedy politicians.
The ACN chieftain, however, commended the EFCC for the good job it was doing on the ‘illegal loan’ obtained by the former Speaker, even as he charged the commission to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.
He also urged the anti-graft agency to beam its searchlight on the state houses of assembly across the country, maintaining that the finances of the immediate past assemblies at the state level should be probed.
