The Cross River State chapter of the Action
Congress of Nigeria has warned its only member in the state House of
Assembly, Mr. Alex Irek, against defecting to the ruling Peoples
Democratic Party.
The party chairman, Mr. Cletus Obun, gave the warning during a reception organised in honour of Irek by the state chapter of the ACN on Wednesday in Calabar, the state capital.
As the only member of the opposition party in the 25-member House, Irek is automatically the minority leader of the Assembly.
Obun cautioned him against allowing himself to be lured back into the PDP fold.
Obun said that the ACN had been vindicated. “The ruling party in the state claimed that there was no opposition but today we have been vindicated by producing a member in the House,” he said.
He said the ACN had 21 cases at the state Election Tribunal, adding that, “we are going to take over that assembly in due course.”
Earlier, Irek had submitted that every legislative assembly needed a strong opposition to function effectively.
The member representing Obubra state constituency said despite being the only opposition member in the House, he would try to change the course of things.
“I know that I am the only opposition member in the House but nonetheless I will do my best to bring the much needed change in the assembly,” Irek said.
He decried the insatiable quest by some politicians to make money for themselves at the expense of the people they are representing.
He promised to reward his constituency through good representation, saying, “I will not dash your hopes.”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Benue State chapter of ACN, Mr. Abbah Moro, has expressed optimism that the party will emerge victorious in cases pending before the state Election Petitions Tribunal.
Moro stated this in an interaction with journalists on Wednesday in Calabar.
He said his confidence was hinged on the ability of the judiciary to give unbiased judgment.
