The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz
Ringim, on Tuesday said Lagos State needed a special security grant from
Federal Government because of its strategic relevance to the economy of
the country.
Also the state governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, warned drivers in the state to either obey all traffic rules or be ready to face the wrath of the law.
Ringim and Fashola spoke at the inauguration of six patrol gun boats for policemen attached to the Marine Police Lagos Command.
The IG assured that the police hierarchy was committed to ensuring lasting peace and was also ready to partner with Lagos to ensure the security of lives and property in the state despite its large population.
The police boss submitted that the ultimate security of lives and property in Lagos would attract both local and foreign investment and make businesses thrive.
Ringim argued that a special security grant was necessary because Lagos is the economic nerve centre of the country coupled with the fact that it has high population base.
He said maintaining security in the state came with a lot of pressure, adding that a special grant would allow the police to meet most of the challenges being faced in ensuring security of lives and property.
“For businesses to thrive, security of life and property must not only be assured but also tackled holistically from all fronts; it is on this that we have realised that Lagos State deserves a special security arrangement as the nerve centre of the nation,” he said.
He explained that the gun boats would patrol areas like Marina, Apapa, Ijora Coal, Atlas Cove, Ibafon, Epe and Badagry, among others.
He said, “The police resolved to provide the gun boats based upon the tour made to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation facilities and tank farm in January 2011, it has become imperative to add additional six backup gun boats for effective patrol of the facilities.
“It is my expectation that the Police in Lagos State will be able to provide adequate security around all federal government installations, vital public and private assets along the riverine areas of Epe through Marina to Badagry.”
Ringim commended Fashola for his fight against crime and his unrelenting support to the police in the state. He described him as a worthy partner in the fight against crime and criminal activities.
Fashola promised that his administration would not relent in providing adequate security for Lagosians.
He added that he expected the people of the state, especially the transporter, to reciprocate by following the state traffic rules.
