Printing machine saga: ‘Assembly cannot pass judgment on case in Court’

Prominent Nigerian musician, Christy Essien Igbokwe, has taken the immediate past Akwa Ibom House of Assembly to task over its call for her family to be investigated regarding the issue of a printing machine which, she alleged, was supplied to (and used by) the Akwa Ibom Newspaper Corporation about 12 years ago.
Igbokwe, popularly called Lady of Songs, said in a statement that she had received reports that the Assembly, while on valedictory session, had reviewed the case and asked her family to make refunds in addition to calls for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate how forged documents were used in clearing the machine.
“This matter has been in court and we wonder what standing the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has to conclude on a matter that so situates if not living in fool’s paradise,” she said in the statement.
She advised the assembly to focus on policing the executive arm of government and not dissipate its energy on mundane things.
The Igbokwe’s family Lawyer, Mr. Gerald Abonyi, also said in a statement that both parties had joined issues in suit No. ID/1257/2008 and suit No. M/285/2008 all pending in Lagos and that the legislative arm of Akwa Ibom State was even joined as party to the suit.
He wondered why, having been subjected to the jurisdiction of the court, the assembly still turned around to conduct trials and probes without the presence of the other party and in utter disrespect to the proceedings of the High Court.
“The proper step therefore is to quash the proceedings giving rise to such resolution as same can never stand on the pillars of the rule of law, natural justice, equity and good conscience,” he said
