Election: Postponement a blessing – Buhari
Former head of state and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change,
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (reted.) has described the postponement of last Saturday’s National Assembly election as a blessing, saying it has exposed “the very sophisticated rigging strategies of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.”
Addressing journalists at the Benin Airport, in Edo State, on his way to Onitsha, Anambra State, for his presidential campaign, Buhari said the decision taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to postpone the National Assembly election was a blessing in disguise.
He said during the botched National Assembly elections, there were instances where the total number of voters was 1000 while INEC sent only 300 ballot papers to such places, adding that upon investigation, it was discovered that it was INEC officials who withheld the papers.
“If there are no ballot papers, how can you collate and announce results and post them on the internet for others all over the world to see?” Buhari asked.
The presidential candidate further called on eligible voters across the country to insist on INEC conducting the 2011 elections, saying it is their constitutional right to help choose those who will rule them in the next four years.
