No more business as usual in legislature – Opposition
The leadership of the opposition parties in the Senate has declared that with the outcome of the National Assembly elections, the legislative business will no longer be business as usual.
Responding to the results of the elections which held last Saturday, Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Olorunibe Mamora, told our correspondent in a telephone interview that the results showed that the opposition would subtantially determine the turn of events in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
He said, “We are going to have a good representation now in the Senate and in the House of Representatives. Now the people will truly be able to benefit from apporpriate representation.
“It will no longer be business as usual, where a single party controlled and determined the direction of events in the National Assembly.”
Mamora however noted that although the Peoples Democratic Party would definitely have the majority, a proper alliance among the minority parties would pose a formidable opposition in the next legislature.
“We are not just talking about opposition for its sake. We will need an effective opposition. This will also depend on the nature of the leadership of the minority parties,” Mamora added.
But Deputy Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), said in spite of the gains by the opposition parties, the PDP’s comfortable lead would be sustained.
“Maybe we will not get the 72 in the Senate, but it will be about 60 and we will find a way of dealing with the problems that arise with that shortfall,” he said.
According to Ndoma-Egba, there is no reason for the PDP to be jittery at the moment as the results released so far have shown that the party might win more seats.
