INDICATIONS have emerged that Oyo State Governor,
Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, may have commenced moves to pacify the
Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, ahead of the April 26
governorship election in the state.
The move, sources said, was to avoid what happened in Oyo township area during the National Assembly elections when the Action Congress of Nigeria won in the area.
The frosty relationship between the monarch and the governor worsened last year when Adeyemi publicly accused Alao-Akala of planning to assassinate him.
Our correspondent learnt in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday that as part of the agreement reached with the traditional ruler, the governor might sack some of his aides to appease the monarch.
An SMS which was said to have originated from one of the leaders spearheading the truce and which was received by our correspondent lent credence to the alleged moves.
If the agreement sailed through, all the four caretaker chairmen of the local government areas in Oyo Town may also lose their jobs.
“The governor was highly disturbed by what happened and we all know it happened because of the dispute between Alaafin and the governor. So, the governor must have seen reason to bow to pressure to seek forgiveness from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III as the race to next week’s governorship election hots up,” a source said.
But Alao-Akala denied negotiating with the Alaafin on the forthcoming election.
The governor, in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, said he had respect for all traditional rulers and he was always willing to dialogue with them on issues bordering on the development of the state.
He said it was not uncommon for political leaders to meet with community leaders and traditional rulers to iron out grey areas in the polity and reach suitable compromises.
