Why ACN, CPC alliance failed — Tinubu

Former Lagos State Governor and chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Saturday said the proposed alliance between the ACN and the Congress for Progressive Change failed because the latter wanted to keep its platform though “the ACN is the leading party.” The ACN leader also disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan sought the support of the party for his presidential ambition when he visited Lagos recently. Tinubu, who spoke at Unit 047, Ward 3, Alausa where he voted, noted that the ACN would have been in danger if it had gone into the alliance on the CPC’s terms. He said, “For an alliance to work, you must give and take; you must make sacrifices; it is unfortunate that some Nigerians are so self centered and have no patriotic desire to sacrifice anything for the nation. With the results of last Saturday’s National Assembly election, it has become obvious that the ACN is better spread, and we should be the leader in an alliance. “The CPC wanted to keep the presidential and vice-presidential slots. We discovered during our talks that they entered into an agreement with the Save Nigeria Group to concede the vice-presidential slot to them. “Our democracy needs a hero; our candidate, Nuhu Ribadu, is young; we have worked hard to build our platform.” But the vice-presidential candidate of the CPC, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said Tinubu should be asked if he could take the indignity that he was trying to mete out to the CPC. Bakare, who spoke in an interview with our correspondents at Opebi Grammar School where he voted, noted that “the CAN, under the watch of Chief Bisi Akande, wanted to perpetrate an illegal act in Nigeria. “They wanted me to postdate my letter of resignation to June and it was for me to be inaugurated on May 29, and for me to resign June 1. This is not only immoral, it is unethical and illegal. “They said the letter should be kept by the two party chairmen. Thank God, I did not sign any ill-cooked document.” Bakare also accused the ACN of proposing the same alliance deal with other political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party. He expressed optimism that the CPC would win the presidential election on merit. By KEMI OBASOLA & BUKOLA ADEBAYO Courtesy Of: Punch
