Dr. Jonathan receives Certificate of Return

The President elect, Dr Goodluck Jonathan has officially received the certificate of return for the presidential election in Abuja on Tuesday.

The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] in Abuja, and was performed by the commission's boss, Professor Attahiru Jega.

The ceremony finally is a confirmation of the results released by the INEC boss and preparatory to his swearing in on May 25, 2011.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 22,495,187; Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) 12,214,853; All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) 917,012; and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) 2,079,151. The total valid votes are 37,716,842 out of 73 million registered voters, representing about 50 per cent voter turn-out.

Dr. Jonathan polled 58.89% of the votes cast; Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (CPC) 31.98%; Mallam Nuhu Ribadu (ACN) 5.54%; and Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (ANPP) 2.40%. The law requires a simple majority or 51 per cent.

Speaking after collecting his return ticket, Dr. Jonathan said Nigeria must quickly move away from partisan battlegrounds and safe guard every single life and property.

"It is regrettable that when the international observers are condemning us for credible elections, we witness violence in some parts of the country, it is really regrettable because it is uncalled for, this what happened in the late 50s, about 58...59, when some parts of the country witnessed similar violence, we did not know that we still had some relics", Jonathan said.

"But that is what a new generation of leaders of this country have to face, to make sure that in the next four years, issues like these will never lead to any riots. We assure Nigerians that we will carry everybody along, run an open government where all Nigerians will play a key role irrespective of the prejudices," he added.
