BREAKING NEWS: Fresh post-election violence claims lives in Northern states
Fresh post-election violence has claimed lives and houses in Kano, Kaduna, Zaria and parts of Adamawa and Katsina states.
The clashes were said to have flared on Sunday night after it became apparent that the Peoples Democratic Party‘s presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, was leading in results declared for Saturday‘s presidential election.
Reports indicated that the violence continued on Monday, with the burning of the home of a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na‘Abba, by violent protesters in Kano.
In Zaria and Kaduna, churces and residential property, including houses belonging to some politicians, were destroyed while a number of people were reportedly killed. Residents of some Northern cities have fled their homes to army barracks, for fear of attacks.
Violence in Mubi, Adamawa State is said to have claimed lives and property in Mubi since Sunday night.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that normalcy has returned to Sokoto as security agents patrol the streets following Sunday night‘s protests over the results of the presidential election.
A 24-hour curfew has reportedly been declared in Kaduna and Adamawa states.
However, NAN reports that calm has returned to Sokoto, following post-election violence.
In Kaduna Gidan Gayu Police Station was razed by fire including Mr Biggs bye-pass. The State Government has imposed a 24 hour curfew.
An online medium, elombah.com, reports that in Jos, some Hausa youths are burning cars around Bauchi Road while in Yola, a crowd of mostly young men besieged traders at the Jimeta modern market, burning posters of Jonathan and that of Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako.
They also took to the streets, chanting, Buhari ”mu ke so, ba mu so hanni(it is Buhari we want, we don‘t want an unbeliever)‘.
Security agents have been deployed in the hotspots while the spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaibu, said emergency response officials had raced to the scenes of the protests.
