INEC, police differ on curfew

The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is not aware of the imposition of a curfew from 10pm today. However, the Nigeria Police Force has said it will restrict movement nationwide from 6pm. In a posting on its Twitter page, INEC said, ”There is no information confirming the rumour anout a 10pm curfew. ”If any curfew is set by INEC for 10pm today, the public will be informed.” However, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olusola Amore, said in a statement that movement would be restricted from 10pm on Friday to 6am on Saturday, while there would also be restriction of movement of persons from 8am to 6pm on Saturday within voting areas and centres. He said persons on essential duties and INEC officials are exempted from the restriction order as they would be properly identified with their identity cards. Amore explained that the restriction order was to enable law enforcement agents to monitor the activities of miscreants, thugs and other criminal elements who may want to disrupt the smooth conduct of the elections.
