INEC inspires voters through social media

The Independent National Electoral Commission has redefined elections in Nigeria, by using social media to inspire Nigerians to actively participate in the process. All through Saturday, INEC issued various guidelines and messages through Twitter. INEC had on Saturday morning issued some telephone numbers and a BlackBerry PIN for Nigerians to report problems encountered in their centres directly to the electoral agency. INEC also inspired Nigerians to observe the counting and collation of results and monitor the conduct of corps members and INEC officials by guiding them through the process on Twitter. For instance, INEC said, ”If you are in Delta State, Sapele, please tell us what is going on via Twitter and these SMS numbers: 0813-832-7889 and 0812-728-0713.” Another tweet, as Twiter messages are called, reads, ”Take a legible picture of the results sheets at your PU (polling unit) in order to prevent changes or modifications.” In another, INEC said, ”Send results. Include PU number and vote count per party.
