The Federal Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen,
has assured Nigerians that the pains being suffered by road users and
travellers on the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, as a result of its
deplorable condition, will soon become a thing of the past.
The minister, who inspected the bad spots on the road at Ore and paid a courtesy visit to the Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, said in Benin City on Thursday that the contractors previously employed by the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out repairs on the road had since resumed work on it.
In his response to the peculiar problem often experienced by road users at the Ofosu-Ore-Ajibandele sections of the expressway, Onolememen said part of the ministry’s effort to re-design the affected sections would include the laying of a stone base and Macadam layer, to prevent water from seeping into the road.
While noting that a major part of the expressway, which covered about 150Km, had been completely recovered and rehabilitated, he said that Julius Berger, Setraco (Nig.) Ltd, and Niger Construction Co. Ltd had commenced preliminary investigations into the wash-out section of the Benin-Okene-Abuja highway at Auchi-Jattu, preparatory to its immediate repair.
Onolememen said the rehabilitation of the Benin-Okene-Abuja Expressway had been fast-tracked, and apart from fixing the bad spots on that road, the task of the selected contractors included the protection of the road from the effects of gully erosion.
The minister pledged that the problem of soil erosion, which had continued to threaten the existence of the expressway for awhile, would be solved with the introduction of a holistic drainage plan that would include the construction of a major drop shaft measuring 40 metres in height.
In his short speech to the visiting minister, Oshiomhole noted that his appointment to the ministry of works came as recognition of Edo State as a haven for abundant talents.
