The Lagos State Government on Monday said it was
determined to ensure safety and security of life and property on the
roads in the state.
The assurance was given during the demonstration of the newly inaugurated vehicle document tracking system at the State Executive Council meeting in Alausa, Ikeja.
The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, said the new device known as Auto Vehicle Inspector had several advantages one of which is an improvement in traffic management.
He explained that the device, after a single punch on the phone, could produce a vehicle identification, including the number plate, information about the owner, the engine number and chassis number.
Opeifa added that details of the demonstration of the device in the past two weeks, showed that only road worthy vehicles would ply the roads because each motorist would be aware that he could be apprehended for not undergoing an MOT test or possessing hackney permit.
He said, “The new vehicle document detection device will also ensure safety on the roads as the Police can easily detect crime committed by vehicles without any chance of escape by the culprits.
“When the new national driving licence, being planned by the Federal Government, comes into place, the new device will assist agencies like the Federal Road Safety Commission and Vehicle Inspection Officers collaborate and obtain information.”
Also briefing the council about the device, the Director of Finance and Administration in the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, Mrs Olubukola Omolaja, said the programme was a success going by the willingness of members of the public to access it.
The demonstration process also featured the application of the workings of the device on some electronically generated vehicle identification numbers whose details were also verified and displayed.
