Despite the deluge of criticisms that has
followed the list of Resident Electoral Commissioners nominated by
President Goodluck Jonathan, a group, the Nigerian Citizens Forum, has
thrown its weight behind the nominations.
Specifically, the group faulted a national newspaper (not THE PUNCH) that accused the president of bias in re-appointing some of the RECs.
The group’s position was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday by its President, Mr. Ikpowonsa Wilson; and Legal Adviser, Agnes Osime.
It said that accusing Jonathan of bias in re-appointing the REC representing Edo State, Mr. Austin Okogie, and Dr. Gabriel Ada could be described as slighting the president’s integrity.
The group also faulted the claim by the newspaper that the list of the new RECs was full of names of men that cannot be said to have reasonably acquitted themselves in similar positions in recent past.
“What experience had Prof. Attahiru Jega before he conducted the April 2011 general election which was commended by members of the international community?
“The newspaper and its owners are definitely crying wolves by querying the sincerity of President Jonathan in enthroning genuine electoral reforms in the country,” the statement added.
