The Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolemenmen, on
Thursday said the Federal Government had adopted new measures to tackle
seeming intractable nature of the Benin-Ore road.
Speaking in Benin, Edo State, during a visit to the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, Onolemenmen said experts had identified the fundamental nature of the problem affecting the road.
The minister, who listed natural defects along the road, including water table level, said government agents had adopted a multi-pronged approach to address the problem.
Oshiomhole, however, blamed the poor state of federal roads across the country on faulty designs and the use of sub-standard materials by contractors handling the projects.
The governor said it was sad that over the years, the problem had persisted without a solution.
He said the economy of the South-South had been negatively affected due to the poor state of the Benin-Ore road, adding that the condition of the road had made some companies in the region to relocate.
The governor, who also drew the attention of the minister to the poor state of the Uselu-Ugbowo road, Auchi-Okene road and erosion-devastated portion on Auchi-Agenebode road at Ayogwiri, said the major challenge of many roads in the country was insensitivity on the part of some contractors coupled with poor designs.
