The National Youth Leader, Action Congress of
Nigeria, Mr. Mirki Ebikibina, has asked President Goodluck Jonathan and
governors to channel their security budgets to programmes that will
better the lives of youths in the country.
Ebikibina, in a statement to mark the World Youth Day, regretted that while Nigerian youths remained highly underdeveloped with many of them jobless, some people in government were busy stashing away billions of naira in private accounts in the name of security votes.
He challenged Jonathan and governors to establish and finance personal programmes for youths using part of their security votes.
Ebikibina said it was wrong for elected public officials to use public funds to sustain their political interests when unemployment was rising in the country.
He asked Jonathan and governors to emulate the examples of Governor Rochas Okorocha (Imo State ) and Mr. Rauf Aregbesola(Osun State), who according to him, are using parts of their security votes to fund eduction and job creation.
Ebikibina said Okorocha directed that an estimated N6.4bn meant for security votes be used in the education sector while Aregbesola ordered that his should be used to empower 20,000 unemployed youths.
He urged governors to take actions that would portray them as identifying with youths in the country.
He argued that frustration had stampeded youths into social vices, adding that the development indicated failure of governance.
