The Federal Road Safety Commission has certified over 235 driving schools in the ongoing nationwide Driving School Standardisation Programme.
The Public Education Officer of the commission, Mr. Nseobong Akpabio, said these certified schools were the ones that met the criteria for standard driving schools.
Akpabio said the certified schools also had simulators which the students used for practice before they got to the stage of driving vehicles on roads.
He said, “We are trying to reduce the occurrence of accidents on our roads and improve the behaviour of drivers. So we are putting everything in place to ensure that after the programme, every driving school that is not up to standard will no longer operate in this country.”
Akpabio said the driving schools that did not meet up with certification criteria would not be allowed to operate until they were upgraded.
“It is either they (uncertified driving schools) merge with other driving schools that have been certified or they close down until they are able to upgrade their facilities. We cannot allow the quacks to continue,” Akpabio said.
Akpabio said the standardisation programme was initiated after a nationwide survey conducted by the FRSC identified 451 untrained and unqualified driving school instructors.
He said the result of the survey showed that some of the instructors were under-age, lacked basic driving skills, and did not have driving licence.
In a related development, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Jonas Agwu, said only 31 driving schools had been certified in the state.
