The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management has called on traditional rulers, clerics, academics and leaders in Osun to mediate in the face-off between civil servants and the state government.
A statement by the Osun State Chairman of the institute, Mr Makanjuola Anifowose, and the Secretary, Mr Segun Olatidoye, called for a quick resolution of the labour crisis in the state.
According to the statement on Thursday, in Osogbo, the citizenry will be at the receiving end when labour and government engage in a rift.
Governor Rauf Aregbesola last week stated the readiness of his administration to pay N18,000 minimum wage to workers on Grade Level 01 to 07, adding that workers on Grade Level 08–17 would receive the minimum wage on pro rata basis.
By pro rata basis, the state government said the N18,000 minimum wage implementation would decrease as the grade level of workers increases from 08 to 17.
The statement said, “When two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. Therefore, we appeal to our royal fathers, religious leaders, founding fathers and erudite scholars to mediate in the crisis.”
Expressing confidence in the Aregbesola administration, CIPM urged the citizenry to support the state government in the bid to deliver the dividends of democracy.
It will be recalled that all labour unions went on strike 10 days ago to press home demands for the full implementation of the minimum wage.
Osun State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Saka Adesiyan, said the congress was ready to call off the strike if the government heeded its minimum wage increase request.
Meanwhile, activities at government establishments have been grounded by the strike.
