The court-reinstated Chairman, National Union of
Road Transport Workers, Oyo State Council, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola
(a.k.a. Tokyo), has raised the alarm over an alleged plan by some
unnamed persons to cause anarchy in the state ahead of the May 29, 2011
inauguration date of the governor-elect, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
Akinola alleged that the plot to destabilise the state was being sponsored by persons who were not happy with the result of the governorship election in which the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Ajimobi, was declared victorious.
The NURTW boss’ alarm was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday.
Tokyo’s allegation came on the heels of a fracas in which about 12 persons were said to have sustained varying degrees of injury.
The victim’s were wounded on Monday, during a clash between factions in the state NURTW.
The clash reportedly erupted when a particular faction attempted to dislodge loyalists of another faction at some motor parks especially in Iwo Road.
The state police command’s spokesman, Mr. Tunji Ajimuda, confirmed the clash but denied knowledge of casualties.
He said the command has restored normalcy in the troubled area.
Akinola alleged further that those behind the move had already identified some strategic locations in the state where they would wreak havoc.
Giving more insight into the alleged destabilisation plot, the NURTW boss claimed that the brains behind the plot had already acquired hundreds of T-shirts on which they had printed either his photograph or the logo of the ACN, all in the bid to make the public believed that the political party was behind the orgy of violence and also to implicate him (Akinsola).
Akinsola therefore called on members of his union in the 33 local government areas of the state to distant themselves from “the unscrupulous and self-serving elements” and shun every action capable of causing breakdown of law and order in the state.
Rather than causing unrest, he asked the NURTW members to join forces with the progressives to take the state to greater heights in the overall interest of the present and future generations.
He advised the union members to remain calm in the face of provocations and shun acts of violence or confrontation, particularly at motor parks and garages.
Akinsola reteirated his earlier position that Ajimobi’s victory in the just-concluded governorship election in the state signified “the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.”
“Of much more significance is the fact that Ajimobi’s emergence as governor-elect marks the dawn of a great change for Oyo State, as opposed to the present tension-soaked reign of political rascality and executive oppression,” he added.
The NURTW boss maintained that, at last, the era of impunity and lack of respect for the rule of law, equity and social justice was fast crumbling in Oyo State and would finally be off the scene only in a matter of days when the governor-elect formally takes oath of office.
The Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Mr. Tunji Ajimuda, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, denied knowledge of the impending crisis.
