The outgoing governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo
Alao-Akala, on Wednesday took a retrospective look at his four-year
administration in the state and boasted that he was not afraid of
investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission or any
other anti-graft agency
He said throughout his tenure, he ruled the state with the fear of God, stressing that he would not entertain any fear.
Alao-Akala made the observation while receiving a delegation of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists led by its chairman, Mr. Gbenga Opadotun, who paid him a farewell visit in his office in Ibadan, the state capital.
While highlighting his administration’s achievements in the areas of agriculture, road network, health and education among others, the governor said the people of the state would appreciate him better after he would have handed over to his successor on May 29.
He said, “Because I know that I don’t have any skeleton in my cupboard, I am not afraid of investigation by the EFCC.
“I did not get myself involved in any shady deal because I have a name to protect. My name is an asset.
“It is good that I leave a good name for my children who will like to use the name in future. I won’t do anything that will tarnish the name.
“When I read a media report that I was being investigated over an N8bn deal, I laughed because such money will just make me mad.”
He commended journalists in the state for putting him on his toes by their criticism, saying “I enjoyed your criticism. If we were not criticised, we wouldn’t have sat up. Such criticism reminds us of our responsibilities to do things in the right way.”
He also urged the media professionals to beware of those who may want to use them to tarnish his image after he might have left office, urging them to crosscheck their facts before publishing.
“Beware of people that will want to call a dog a bad name to hang it. Crosscheck any claims about me from me as my telephone lines remain the same. Be assured that I won’t cover up any story.
“We have added value to the state by adhering strictly to our 13-point agenda. We leave the rest for posterity to judge us,” he added.
Earlier, Opadotun said he decided to lead his members to pay a farewell visit to the governor for the support he gave the union throughout his stay in office.
