The Action Congress of Nigeria will, at a meeting
of its National Assembly members-elect in Abuja on Tuesday (today)
decide on the Senate presidency and other top posts in the next federal
legislature.
Investigations by our correspondent showed that the party’s National Assembly members would not support the ruling Peoples Democratic Party’s power sharing formula.
It was also gathered that the party would also pick the Minority Leader between the incumbent, Mr. Hakeem Gbajabiamila (Surulere1 Federal Constituency) and Mr. Biodun Akinlade (Egbado South/Ipokia Constituency).
Akinlade, formerly a PDP member, defected to the ACN, where he re-contested and won the House of Representatives poll.
An incumbent member of the House of Representatives, who pleaded anonymity, said that the ACN would advise the members on their roles in the National Assembly.
He also said, “We will not support candidates tipped by the PDP for top jobs. We will only back people that are capable of leading the National Assembly to make laws that will impact positively on Nigerians.
“If the PDP leaders think they can foist their power-sharing formula on us, they must be deceiving themselves. Our block votes in both chambers will go to candidates we want.”
When contacted, the ACN’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, said the meeting of the party’s National Assembly members would be behind closed doors.
He described the PDP’s power-sharing arrangement as a conspiracy theory, which he said, the ACN was not interested in.
He stated, “What I can assure you is that the party, the ACN, will definitely mentor its members to ensure that they continue to contribute to the national development. We are not interested in all these conspiracy theories.
“What we know is that as a party, we will not fail the electorate. We will not fail Nigerians. We are meeting with National Assembly-members-elect to let them know what should be their roles in the National Assembly.
“What kind of legislation they should promote. They should promote legislation that will add value to our government and structure Nigeria into truly federation. We are having a closed door meeting with them in Abuja.”
