As the race for the speakership of the Edo State
House of Assembly hots up, the former Director-General of the Center for
Democratic Studies, Prof.Omo Omoruyi, has appealed to Governor Adams
Oshiomhole to support the ceding of the position to Edo South, for the
area’s overwhelming support for the Action Congress of Nigeria in the
just concluded general elections.
This is coming on the heels of similar calls by the Benin National Congress, a socio-cultural organisation, urging the leadership of the party to cede the position to Oredo Constituency, which it said had supported the ACN government since its inception in the state.
The group in a statement said that Edo Central, where the current Speaker, Mr. Bright Omokhodion, hails from, voted for the PDP, “therefore, it would be unfair to the Benins if the position is retained in the area. The ACN won only one seat in Edo Central while it cleared all the ten seats in Edo South.”
Speaking on the issue, Omoruyi rued what he described as total neglect of Oredo Constituency, saying, “Oredo has about 300,000 names in the voter register. If you add that with Ikpoba/Okha and Egor, it is almost twice the population of Edo North, it is almost three times the population of Edo Central. It is a heavy voting population that has helped the ACN, therefore, something must be created to reward these people for what they have been doing for the ACN.
