The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment,
Dr. Muiz Banire, has denied reports that he has been supporting one of
the aspirants jostling for the Speakership of the Lagos State House of
Assembly.
Banire, who spoke in Lagos on Wednesday, admitted that being an elder in the party had given some people the impression that he must have a hand in how the Speaker of the assembly would emerge.
The commissioner denied being “the godfather” of the former Deputy Speaker of the assembly, Mrs. Funmilayo Tejuoso, who is one of the lawmakers aspiring to the House top job.
Banire said, “Of course, I cannot say I do not know Tejuoso; we are from the same constituency, but personally, I told her not to contest for the post, that she should allow others to slug it out for the post.
“This position is simple. The Action Congress of Nigeria’s zoning system in the state is clear. As the situation is, I believe that the Speaker of the House must come from the (Lagos) East since the other two zones have produced the governor and the deputy.”
The commissioner reasoned that as one of the leaders in the party, he could not afford to take sides in matters that were exclusively that of the members of the House of Assembly.
“As a member of the national caucus of the ACN, I cannot begin to dabble into a matter that is essentially that of the lawmakers.
“Probably, because some people feel I have been in the system for a long time and like an insider in the assembly, I must know who emerges what. I’m not endorsing anybody because it is not my duty to do that and I equally believe that it is not the turn of Mushin to produce the Speaker,” he said.
Banire admitted that he was aware that the incumbent Speaker, Mr. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, and the Majority Leader, Mr. Taiwo Kolawole, were involved in the tussle to become the Speaker of the state Seventh Legislature.
He refuted claims that the leaders of the party had picked a candidate, saying electing a Speaker was the duty of the lawmakers.
