Rule of law: FG seeks training of citizens

The Federal Government on Wednesday in Abuja expressed concern over flagarant disobedience to court orders with a call for the training of citizens on the rule of law and other development projects. It also traced and blamed the violations of the rule of law on the successive military regimes in the country, saying there was need to review the content of the programme for the training of law students. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello-Adoke (SAN), disclosed this in his keynote address titled ‘The Rule of law: An overview’, at a one day seminar organised by the rule of law committee of the Nigerian Bar Association. He said, “The need to review the content of the programme for the training of law students cannot be over-stated. Even at the risk of being accused of repetitiveness, the mantra always should be obedience to court rulings.” He commended the judiciary for acting as bulwalk against ouster clauses and executive lawlessness over the years adding that such was the only bastion to guarantee the fundamental human rights of citizens. The AGF said, “The need to keep the rule of law from the rule of force or rule of politics cannot also be overstated. The rule of law, rather than the rule of force, is the only effective machinery that brings order and good governance to any society.” By Friday Olokor, Abuja Courtesy of: Punch
