ACN alleges plot to impose emergency rule in Ekiti

The Action Congress of Nigeria in Ekiti State has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party in the state is orchestrating violence in order to ensure that emergency rule is imposed in the state. ACN chairman, Mr. Jide Awe, told our correspondent in Ado-Ekiti on Friday that the PDP was bent on using its do-or-die approach to recapture the state. But he said the alleged plan would fail because the people of the state would resist it. Awe alleged that the PDP chieftains had been stockpiling arms and ammunition for the April poll, saying security agencies should closely watch them because they were a “menace to the state.” He said, “They are perpetrating violence in the state in order to give a false impression of insecurity and after unleashing terror on the people, they would quickly blame it on the Action Congress of Nigeria. The mission is to heat up the state so that emergency rule can be declared but all this will surely fail.” He said the PDP attacked the ACN in Aramoko and almost killed the deputy speaker while many others were injured by the PDP thugs. He said the PDP was desperate to return to power but could not do so because it did not please the people of the state while in office. Another chieftain of the ACN, Mr. Babafemi Ojudu, added that the people of Ekiti should not allow the PDP hoodlums to draw them to violence. But the Chairman of the PDP in the state, Chief Bola Olu-Ojo, said in a telephone interview that the ACN was the aggressors in all the attacks. “Chief Jide Awe is economical with the truth. I used to respect him so much but he has suddenly changed since his party got to office. “The ACN has killed and wounded so many of our people and destroyed their property. “We brought the corpse of our member who was killed to the Governor’s Office on Wednesday. Let them show to the world any of them who has been injured or their property destroyed.” Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association, Ado-Ekiti branch, has decried the rising insecurity in the state, saying security agencies must not be biased in the discharge of their duties. The Chairman of the NBA, Mr. Owoseeni Ajayi, at a press conference on the spate of killings in the state, urged politicians to be tolerant as the elections drew near. Ajayi said, “We are fed up with the waste of human lives. Wasting of human lives by policemen and thugs must stop.” He said the April poll would be a mirage if police colluded with thugs to kill people. “We will take every necessary legal step to ensure that those who perpetrated the killings are brought to book,” he said.
