Assassination attempt: Senator Uzamere escapes death; two persons killed

Two persons have been killed in Benin City following a shootout between the convoy of Senator Ehigie Uzamere and four suspected assassins. Sergeant Onyeisi, a police orderly attached to Senator Uzamere was killed in the shootout on Sunday evening at Zabayor Street, Benin City, but not after he had shot and killed one of the gunmen. The Senator's driver, Mr Mohammed was shot in the hip and is receiving treatment in the hospital. Senator Ehigie Uzamere who briefed newsmen on the incident this afternoon said he had just alighted from his car walking towards his aide's car when the gunmen opened fire on him. The Senator who had decamped from the PDP and is seeking re-election on the platform of the ACN said campaign should be based on issues and not bullets. He however said he will not be deterred by the assassination attempt and will pursue his campaign to conclusion. He called on the Police to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring to book those responsible.
